British Shooting, in conjunction with Dorset County Council and West Dorset District Council, are hoping to host an International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in May 2010 at the Southern Counties Shooting ground near Dorchester.
World cups are annual grand-prix style events and there are normally four held every year. Olympic and World Championship medallists compete in this series on a regular basis and the event will provide further evidence of Great Britain's ability to organise top class international events. There are 3 Olympic shotgun events; skeet, trap and double trap and with 2012 Olympic qualifying places available this event is likely to attract some top competitors.
It is estimated that there will be 650 competitors from 85 countries, with 800 support staff (medical, coaches, volunteers etc). The event is also expected to attract 500 spectators daily.
Planning permission has been granted for a 100 room hotel on site but this event will provide opportunities for all local accommodation and attractions.
It is expected that there will be significant levels of media coverage for the event, raising the profile of not only shooting but West Dorset as an area to come and visit.
UK Sport economic impact template for the event calculates an impact of £1.2 million for the local area.
The ISSF are currently considering the bid and it will be announced in Beijing in mid April.
