Cor Meibion Morlais Choir from Wales at Eype Centre

Despite appearing in the infancy of the Eype Centre for the Arts in 2004, the Côr Meibion Morlais drew a sizeable audience to St. Peter’s attracted by the rich and evocative tones of this famous choir from the Rhonda Valley. Having been established as a group of a dozen singers called the Mustard Club in Taylorstown by Alfred Morgan in 1928 it is now a choir of 45 voices from all walks of life and based in Ferndale, Rhondda, South Wales. Not all appear at any one gathering, but we do hope some thirty great Welsh voices will be heard on the 18th.

In its 80 year history the choir has survived dislocation, tumultuous decades of unemployment amongst its members, war and social change. It is a tribute to its many members that it has survived and gone on to perform some 30 engagements a year in the UK and has made 18 tours in Europe and North America. From its new home in the Morlais Hall, which it acquired in the 1980s, the choir provides a valued meeting room to the local community and a venue for small concerts as well as a venue to entertain visiting musical organisations, most recently the Russian State Cossack Song and Dance Ensemble. The members clearly enjoy the music in which they find fulfilment and have been able to recruit enthusiastic and loyal choristers.
