Fossil Collecting in West Dorset
Due to its age, there are some fantastic spots for fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast. The beaches located around Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Burton Bradstock and Seatown are all extremely popular locations where a variety of different fossils can be found.
Regular guided fossil hunting walks take place from the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre and Lyme Regis Museum and fossil hunting information can also be found at the Lyme Regis museum providing the best and safest way to get started.
If you do plan to go without guidance, please ensure that you read the Jurassic Coast Safety and The Fossil Code and download the guide to West Dorset beaches and coastal activities. These can both be found by following the above links.
LANDSLIDE!
On the 6th May 2008 a 340 to 400 metre section of the lower cliffs at Lyme Regis broke away. Currently only the lower part of this landslide system has shifted, however this could result in further landslides during the winter.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from the site of the landslide as not only is there the potential for further landslides but the area also contains debris from an old landfill site.
