Dorset County Museum
Displays of Dorset history from the earliest times, wildlife, archaeology, geology and famous figures from the past. Atmospheric Victorian hall, modern exhibition gallery, impressive laid Roman mosaics. New Jurassic Coast Geology gallery opened 2006 telling the story of the whole of the Jurassic Coast. Major gallery of Dorset’s writers with sections on the dialect poet William Barnes and 20th century writers. Gallery includes reconstruction of Thomas Hardy’s study from Max Gate, computer interactives and audiovisuals. Maiden Castle presentation in extensive Archaeology Gallery. Comprehensive schools’ service. A 6,000 year history of Dorchester in ‘Dorchester Gallery’. Free audio-guide service and tactile images for the visually impaired. Up to 2 accompanied children free.
