Lyme Regis

Marine Parade, Lyme RegisThe picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis, characterised by its breath-taking views and hundreds of years worth of character, is the ideal place to take all the family on holiday.

The harbour, known as the Cobb, is one of the town's most significant landmarks. Built in the thirteenth-century the Cobb is renowned for being the landing place of the Duke of Monmouth during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.

Lyme Regis has featured in a number of literary works, including Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' and 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by local author John Fowles. Both novels have been adapted on location for film and television, bringing the literary heritage of Lyme Regis to life on the big screen.

Fossil hunting near Lyme RegisThe cliffs around Lyme Regis house fossils dating back to the Jurassic period. The greatest discovery to date occurred in the nineteenth-century, when local scientist and fossil hunter Mary Anning found the world's first ichthyosaur.

Lyme Regis offers many family-friendly activities and for a bit of retail therapy, explore the town's unique array of craft shops. Be tempted by one of the town's tearooms, and treat yourself to a cup of tea and a delicious slice of homemade cake.
