The historic county town of Dorchester boasts elegant 18th century houses, broad walks and cultural tradition, and is still very much the 'Casterbridge' of Thomas Hardy's novels.
History is all around you. The spectacular hill-fort of Maiden Castle dates back 4000 years and is the largest in Europe, and the Roman Town House is the finest example of its kind in Britain. Dorchester was also the setting for some very dramatic events - Judge Jeffreys' 'Bloody Assize' took place here in 1685 and the town's Old Crown Court and Cells housed the trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs 1834.
There are many quality attractions to visit in the town. The Dorset County Museum has a new Jurassic Coast Gallery as well as collection of Thomas Hardy memorabilia, including a reconstruction of his study at Max Gate, his Dorchester home.
There are museums dedicated to Tutankhamun and the Terracotta Warriors, and for family fun, head for Teddy Bear House and the Dinosaur Museum. The Keep Military Museum is home to superb rooftop views of the town and the surrounding countryside.
Come on a Wednesday and experience the lively atmosphere of market day in town. On the first Saturday of the month you can take a trip to Prince Charles' internationally renowned Poundbury and enjoy the Farmers' Market.
With events throughout the year and plenty of unique shopping opportunities, there is always plenty to discover in the county town.
