Bridport

BridportBridport is a vibrant town set amongst the West Dorset hills. It is particularly well known for its popular Farmer's Market and its passion and commitment for local and organic produce. The town has also been championed by TV chef Hugh Fernley Whittingstall in his River Cottage series.

Dating from the 9th or 10th century, the town developed areputation for its quality industry. By the early 13th century, Bridport had become the country's most important ropemaking centre. The Bridport Museum will take you through the town's interesting and varied history and is well worth a visit. You can also take a tour around Palmers Brewery, one of the few traditional thatched breweries left in England.

A regular market has been held inOlive stall Bridport for over 1000 years. Today there is a colourful market every Wednesday and Saturday as well as a Farmer's Market held on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Shopping in the combines local craft and gift shops with some of the larger named stores.

One mile south of the town is West Bay (once called Bridport Harbour). This pretty harbour village is the gateway to the magnificent Jurassic Coast. The busy waterfront, with characteristic kiosks, buzzes on a summer's day. In the evening, try one of the great pubs or restaurants to sample West Bay coastlinea fresh seafood supper. West Bay makes an ideal centre for strollers, hikers, fishermen and all who come to enjoy the beautiful West Dorset coastline.
